Bulgaria National Flag

Nov 30th, 2018

Bulgaria, officially known as the Republic of Bulgaria, is located in Southeast Europe and consists of 42,855 square miles. The city of Sofia serves as the country’s capital. In 1908, Bulgaria declared independence from the Turkish, or Ottoman, Empire. In 1991, the country transitioned from multiparty election state to democratic constitution.

The Bulgarian flag was first adopted in 1879 after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. The design was changed several times over the years to include the state emblem of the party that was in control. The basic design, minus any emblems, was adopted in 1991 when the country adopted a democratic constitution.

The meanings assigned to the flag design include the following:

*     Green: Agriculture and the fertility of the land

*     Red: Bulgarian courage

*     White: Peace

According to Article 15 of the Bulgaria flag law that was enacted in 1998, the flag is a national symbol of Bulgaria. It “expresses the independence and sovereignty of the Bulgarian state.”
