Germany National Flag

Feb 9th, 2019

Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is located in Central and Western Europe between the Baltic and Noah seas and the Alps. It consists of 137,988 square miles. The city of Berlin serves as the country’s capital. Germany is governed as a federal parliamentary republic.

The official national flag of Germany was adopted in 1949. The field is a triband of black, red and yellow, the national colors of the country.

The meanings assigned to the flag design are unknown, but there are two popularly held theories:

*     The colors were taken from the flag used by the Jena Students League, a radical university student group that was banned by the Carlsbad Decrees in 1819

*     The colors were symbolic of the Lutzow Free Corps uniforms that were mostly black with red facing and gold buttons. The Corps was a group of university students that were formed in 1813 during Napoleon’s occupation of Germany.

Germany’s official flag is a symbol of constitutional order. The laws relating to the flag make defamation of punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine.
