Guatemala, officially the Republic of Guatemala, is a country in Central American that borders the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It consists of 42,042 square miles. The city of Guatemala de la Asuncion, commonly known as Guatemala City, serves as the capital. Guatemala gained its independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821, and from the First Mexican Empire in 1823. Guatemala is governed by a representative democracy.


The national flag of Guatemala was adopted in 1871. How it was chosen or the name of the flag’s designer is unknown.


The meanings assigned to the flag design include the following:


*     Blue: The Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, both border the country, and independence

*     White: Guatemala, integrity, peace, and purity


The meaning assigned to the center emblem (the country’s coat of arms that was designed by Johan Baptist Frener) include the following:


*     Bird: The bird is a Respoindent Quetzal and represents liberty

*     Libertad 15 de Septembre de 1821: Freedom September 15, 1821 – the date that the country gained its independence

*     Rifles: Readiness to defend

*     Swords: Honor

*     Wreath: Victory
