Highland County, Ohio, Flag

Jun 9th, 2018

Highland County is located in southwest Ohio and consists of 558 square miles. It was founded in 1805 and chose Hillsboro as the location of the county seat. Highland County is named for its hilly landscape between the Scioto and Little Miami rivers.

Nothing is known about how the Highland County flag was chosen or its designer. The flag has a blue field and features an image of the Highland County courthouse in the center. The date on the flag, 1805, is the date that the county was founded.

It is interesting to note that the Highland County courthouse was built in the early 1830s and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest courthouse in the United States that is still in continuous use.

The Ohio Veterans Plaza at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio, features plaques and accompanying flagpoles from each of the 88 counties in Ohio. The flags were presented at the Ohio Statehouse in 2003 during the Bicentennial flag dedication ceremonies and are now displayed annually.
