Feb 23rd, 2019

Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is located in Central American and borders the Pacific Ocean and the Gulfs of Fonseca and Honduras. It consists of 43,433 square miles. The city of Tegucigalpa serves as the country’s capital. Honduras gained its independence from the Fist Mexican Empire in 1821, and from the Federal Republic of Central America in 1838. It is governed by a presidential republic.

The national flag of Honduras was adopted in March 1866. The triband flag design is based on the Federal Republic of Central America flag. The five stars were added to the Honduras flag to help differentiate the two flags. How the flag was chosen and its actual designer is unknown.

The meanings assigned to the flag design include the following:

*     Blue: The Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, blue sky, and brotherhood

*     Stars: The five original Central America provinces: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua
