Hungary National Flag

Feb 22nd, 2019

Hungary is located in Central Europe in the Carpathian Basin. It is a landlocked country consisting of 35,920 square miles. The city of Budapest serves as the capital. Hungary became an independent country in 1920 after the Treaty of Trianon ended World War I. It is governed as a democratic parliamentary republic.

The official flag of Hungary was adopted in May 1957. How it was chosen and who designed the flag are unknown. It is known that the same flag design was used by the republican movement, but the colors were taken from the historical Hungarian coat of arms.

According to legend, the following meanings are assigned to the flag:

*     Red: Strength, blood spilled during Hungary’s fight for freedom

*     White: Faithfulness, freedom

*     Green: Hope, Hungarian land and pastures
