Indonesia National Flag

Mar 1st, 2019

Indonesia, officially the Republic of Indonesia, is located in Southeast Asia between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It consists of over 17 thousand islands covering 735,358 square miles. The city of Jakarta serves as the country’s capital. Indonesia declared independence from The Netherlands in 1945, but the Dutch did not recognize it until 1939. The country is governed as a unitary presidential constitutional republic.

The official flag of Indonesia was adopted in 1945 and then again in 1949. It consists of a red and white field. The design is very similar to the flags of Monaco and Poland. The colors were taken from the 13th century Majapahit Empire’s flag. Indonesia’s flag is commonly referred to as the red and white, but its official name is the lofty bicolor red and white.

The true meanings of the flag design are unknown but some believe the following:

*     Red: Courage; or, the human body and physical life

*     White: Purity; or, soul or spiritual life
