Summit County, Ohio, Flag

Sep 16th, 2018

Summit County is located in the Northeast region of Ohio and consists of 419 square miles. It was formed in 1840 from portions of Medina, Portage, and Stark counties. The county seat is located in the city of Akron. Summit County was named to reflect the fact that the highest elevation on the Ohio and Erie Canal is located in the county.

An official flag was adopted by the Summit County Council in 1988, but how it was chosen or any information about its designer is unknown. The flag has a white field with a blue border and features the county seal in the center.

The meanings assigned to the seal design include the following:

*     1840: The year that the county was founded

*     Barn (lower left): Agriculture – before the county became a manufacturing center

*     Industrial Park (upper left): Manufacturing

*     Person Carrying Canoe (upper right): The county was originally a wilderness area occupied by American Indian tribes

*     Tugboat (lower right): Signified the fact that the county was a major stop on the Ohio and Erie Canal.

*     Stars on Outer Seal (5 total on each side): In 1981, the county had Ohio’s fifth largest population and fifth largest incomes

The county seal was designed by George F. Seigman, a history teacher, in 1981. His entry was chosen from numerous entries received in a countywide seal design contest.

The Ohio Veterans Plaza at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio, features plaques and accompanying flagpoles from each of the 88 counties in Ohio. The flags were presented at the Ohio Statehouse in 2003 during the Bicentennial flag dedication ceremonies and are now displayed annually.
