House Mounted Flagpoles - Half Staff and More

Many people prefer to fly their flags on securely mounted, convenient house mounts. Most house mounted flagpoles are six feet in length and are suitable for flying 3 x 5 flags.

House mounted flagpoles have traditionally been installed beside the front door. The side that of the door that the flagpole should be mounted on is at the discretion of the homeowner, however, it should be placed on the side that will give it a prominent position. For example, if you have a porch lamp on one side of the door, you would want to install your flagpole on the opposite side. In the event that you have porch lamps on both sides of your front door, or you have a roofed porch, it would be appropriate to mount the flagpole centered on the house. It should be noted that, if you intend to fly some other type of flag, such as your state flag, the United State’s flag should be positioned to the viewers left of the other flagpole when viewing while facing the front of the house.

Flying Your House Mounted Flag at Half Staff

The United States Flag Code does not address the issue of flying house mounted flags at half staff. Many people attach a black streamer just below the top of the pole that is about one and a half times the height of the flag. It should be attached so that it falls naturally. Other people simply attach black bows or knots that may or may not have streamers at the points that the flag is fastened to the flagpole.
